A review of Royal Victoria Hospital by Isabel Gillard written on Monday 17th of January 2011
Isabel Gillard's memoir of TB treatment as a young Edinburgh student was published in June 2010 under the title, 'Circe's Island- A young woman's memories of TB treatment in the 1950s'. Sir John Crofton, internationally known for his massive part in the cure, read it and generously offered to write an introduction and appendix to 'Circe's Island' shortly before his death in November 2009.
In verifying her material the writer was so shocked at the current prevalence of TB globally (8,000,000 new cases annually) that she decided to put the royalties from copies behind the WHO's movements to eradicate it.
'Circe's Island' is available in selected shops and from www.unboundpress.co.uk
