A review of Alastair Fowler by William J. Ray written on Sunday 30th of October 2011
Fowler may be the last Renaissance scholar alive. This not only identifies his subject matter. It characterizes his talents and his commitment to truth and to culture reaching back to the post-Feudal era. I never knew him to write an excessive sentence, nor to miss appreciating an interesting point. He is a stylist and a thinker of the first rank. 'Triumphal forms' will last into the next century as an explication of the numerological bases for pre-modern literature. He was agreeable and good even though he didn't think I was right. Our brief correspondence was an enjoyable privilege. I testify to its civilized grace.
