A review of Helen How by Don Barker written on Wednesday 24th of October 2012
It was a knee injury that happened over four years ago. Having been a national level runner for some years I was used to injuries. This one, however, was different. It did not recede with treatment. I had tried various practitioners both in London as well as Edinburgh but none had the answer, despite lots of sessions and various recovery exercises. It was put down to ‘getting older’ or ’wear and tear’. ‘You’ll need an operation.’ Not what I wanted to hear. I wasn’t even able to run for a bus. For someone who used to train twice a day and up to 100 miles a week, this wasn’t how it was meant to be. Although my competitive running days are long gone, I thought I should at least be able to jog in the park or kick a ball with my two boys. I couldn’t stand on my right leg without losing my balance and was unable to walk in a straight line! My right leg had lost its strength, all from this knee injury.
Then I met Helen How. Based on a recommendation from my neighbour, I thought she was worth a try. Within the first consultation she had listened and pinpointed the problem. On the second, she used ‘the machine’. I walked out of that consultation room with my knee feeling alive!
Helen had brought back knowledge from her recent visit to the Arsenal Physio Conference and applied it to my knee injury. Thanks to Helen, the ligaments and muscles were being switched back on and starting to work again. I continued my prescribed exercises at home alongside my fortnightly treatments for two months…
For our holiday this year, we went mountain biking, stand up paddle boarding, running on the beach and generally being active…oh yes, I also ran for a bus. I have lost a stone in weight. If you see a fifty- something man standing on one leg in the middle of Inverleith Park, don’t worry, it’s just because I can!
NO PAIN!
UNBELIEVABLE!
