A review of Poundsavers by A regular shopper written on Monday 10th of December 2012
It's a traditional saying in Edinburgh that one half of it's citizenry window shop on the Bridges and Southside, then buy in shops on Princes Street, and the other half window shop on Princes Street, then buy on Bridges and South Side. POUNDSAVERS, now trading for more than one generation, stands at the very junction of South Bridge and Nicolson Street, looking back down the Bridges to Princes Street. In amongst some of the prominent institutions of the city, it stands close to the Old Quad of the University, next to the Edinburgh Festival Theatre and opposite the Surgeons' Hall. Originally built in the early C19 as townhouses with shops on the ground floor, it was considerably rebuilt and extended at the start of the last century to become an open plan store for a family firm purveying house-furnishings and household goods. The nature and the sources of those household goods supplied may have changed but it's a very useful, well located budget store with a difference. Brothers Hamid, the proprietors, have kept up that tradition, and now newly restored the shopfront to its original splendour..
