A review of Balgreen Primary School by Jack McKenzie written on Wednesday 30th of April 2014
I am proud to say I attended Balgreen Primary School from 1947 until 1952 when I was awarded a scholarship to George Heriot's School. Much of what I learned at Balgreen has stayed with me, not least my teachers' constant attention to and correction of our English grammar. The construction of sentences, punctuation, pronunciation and articulation, along with all the other compulsory subjects which were taught with vigour and thoroughness were invaluable attributes to the excellent education I received there, and I am sure that that tradition carries on. I went on to serve in HM Royal Marines and 11 years service in the former Lothians and Peebles Constabulary and Edinburgh City Police, until 1972 when I entered the theatrical profession where once again the written and spoken word are paramount. I have been an actor, writer, producer and director for the past 42 years, and before there is a chorus of derision about any privileged life I may have had. May I inform any protesters that I was born into abject poverty, the illegitimate child of a sailor and his married girl friend, who both died whilst I was an infant and have made my way in life thanks in no small way to the standards and disciplines applied at Balgreen Primary School. One other more notable former pupil of Balgreen and George Heriot's Schools was the late Ian Richardson of House of Cards fame. .
